The Paleozoic rocks of Sonora consist of carbonate rocks from a warm, shallow marine environment. These rocks are believed to be between approximately 250 and 540 million years old and contain a diverse biota composed of phylloid algae, fusulinid foraminifera, sclerosponges, corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, and crinoids.
